A hands-on garden of wooden pallets and plants

The "Active Garden" uses wooden pallets, plants and natural materials so visitors can get close to Kawasaki's nature and wildlife. It was popular at the Todoroki Ryokuchi venue of the National Urban Greening Fair in Kawasaki, and it was also set up in front of the City Hall restored building in fiscal 2025 (the photo shows that display).
This year there are two parts:
- Active Garden Gate: a large display that uses driftwood and wall-greening materials to show the nature and sea of the Kawasaki coastal area. It has been in place since Saturday, Oct 10.
- Exploring Nature in the Kawasaki Coastal Area: land nature made with soil, trees and wild plants, and sea nature in aquariums. You can crouch down, peer in and touch things to observe nature and wildlife.
In front of City Hall's restored building until Nov 3
"Exploring Nature in the Kawasaki Coastal Area" was at the Humming Garden in Kawasaki Azalea from Monday, Oct 19, to Sunday, Oct 25. From Tuesday, Oct 27, it moves to the front of the City Hall restored building.
Both run until Tuesday, Nov 3 (a national holiday). The announcement does not give viewing hours or a fee.
A lead-up to GREEN×EXPO 2027
Kawasaki City will exhibit at GREEN×EXPO 2027, the international horticultural expo that opens in Yokohama in March 2027. The city is holding this display so people can enjoy nearby nature and greenery and see its value.
On Oct 30, 2026, the city also announced what its area at the expo itself will look like. Visitors enter through a "green tunnel," then move through four zones: hands-on displays on plastic recycling technology and plants that grow in the Kawasaki coastal area, and a theater where people think together about the future of the city. More details will be posted on the city website step by step.
