Street food at Paripari Tenjinyaki by Tsunashima Station: a crispy crepe based on Chinese jianbing, packed with cabbage, for ¥580

Translated from Japanese. If anything differs, the Japanese version is correct.

Key points 30-second read

  1. We tried the "Original Tenjinyaki" (¥580) at Paripari Tenjinyaki Tsunashima Ekimae, a new shop in front of the West Exit of Tsunashima Station. It is a street food based on Chinese "jianbing" (Tianjin crepes).
  2. The thin, crepe-like wrap is crispy and light, and it is filled with plenty of crunchy cabbage. The savory sauce makes it feel as familiar as okonomiyaki.
  3. It looks big, but it is surprisingly light to eat, and you can hold it in one hand, so it is perfect for eating while walking.

Why we picked it: A new street food shop in front of the West Exit of Tsunashima Station. Our editorial team tried it

On Sat, Oct 31, 2026, our editorial team went to the night market by the West Exit of Tsunashima Station. We meant to look at the festival stalls, but a bright red shop in front of the station caught our eye, and before we knew it we were holding a snack born in China (our article on the Tsunashima night market).

A red takeout shop by Tsunashima's West Exit

Paripari Tenjinyaki Tsunashima Ekimae is a takeout shop right in front of the West Exit of Tsunashima Station on the Tokyu Toyoko Line. Look for the red roof and gold sign. Since it was night market day, there was a line in front of the shop.

We came to look at the night market stalls, but this bright red shop pulled us right in!

The shop's poster reading

According to the shop's poster, tenjinyaki is a new kind of griddle food: "a wrap cooked one sheet at a time like a crepe and finished crispy, filled with vegetables, egg, meat and more." It says you can enjoy it with one hand and choose your fillings and flavors. It is based on "jianbing," a Chinese street food.

Each one cooked on a griddle-wide sheet

A thin wrap spread across a large round griddle, brushed with sauce and topped with cabbage, green onion and a crispy fried sheet

Watching it being made, we were surprised by the huge sheet of batter spread across the whole griddle! After you order, they cook each one on the round griddle behind the window. Here is how we saw it made.

1. Spread the batter thin 2. Cook on egg and sesame 3. Flip and brush on sauce 4. Onion, cabbage, crisp sheet 5. Roll up and cut in half
  1. Spread the batter thin like a crepe on a round griddle.
  2. Cook egg and black sesame onto the batter. That is why you see yellow egg and black sesame on the outside of the finished wrap.
  3. Flip it and brush sauce all over.
  4. Add chopped green onion, plenty of shredded cabbage and a crispy fried sheet.
  5. Roll it up, cut it in half and hand it over in paper.

It is fun just to watch it come together in front of you.

That huge sheet of batter on the griddle is hard to look away from.

Inside: crispy fried sheet, cabbage and green onion

The "Original Tenjinyaki" is filled with a crispy fried sheet, shredded cabbage and green onion. Egg and black sesame are cooked onto the outer wrap, and it is seasoned with sauce. Looking at the cut side, layers of crispy sheet and wrap are stacked up, with cabbage packed into the gaps. According to the shop's poster, it is a dish that wraps vegetables, egg, meat and more, and you can choose fillings and flavors. You can also add mentaiko, cheese or egg as toppings.

Crispy wrap, crunchy cabbage

What impressed us most was the light, crispy texture of the wrap. Cooked thin like a crepe, it is fragrant but not heavy, with a light, crunchy bite.

Inside is plenty of crunchy cabbage, which goes perfectly with the crispy wrap. You can really taste the savory sauce too. It feels as familiar as okonomiyaki, yet the texture is completely different, which makes it fun.

Lighter than it looks, made for walking

The finished wrap is packed with fillings and looks very filling. But when you actually eat it, it is lighter than you would expect! Because the wrap is thin like a crepe and full of cabbage, it does not sit as heavy as it looks.

You can hold it in one hand, so it is perfect as a snack while walking around. It makes a big visual impression, yet it disappears surprisingly quickly.

Just the right lightness for a snack while walking around.

Original Tenjinyaki ¥580 at the self-checkout

A self-checkout screen showing

  • Original Tenjinyaki: ¥580 (as shown on the screen in the shop)

Ordering step by step

  1. Go to the "Order here →" sign on the right side of the shop. Line up if there is a line.
  2. On the self-checkout screen, choose "Original Tenjinyaki" and the number you want. The screen had "Tenjinyaki" and "Toppings" menus, and the toppings included mentaiko (spicy cod roe), cheese and egg.
  3. Press "Pay" (お会計する) and pay. Put cash into the coin and bill slots. According to the sign beside the register, you can also use credit cards, transit IC cards, QR code payments and more.
  4. After you pay, they cook each one on the griddle. Pick it up when it is ready.

Because each one is cooked individually, you may wait a little when it is busy. There was a line in the evening on night market day, so allow some extra time.

A notice reading

In front of the shop there was also a notice about "Tenjin Tsukuro," where the shop created new menu ideas with local people before opening. The grand prize went to "mentaiko cheese," and other ideas included Peking duck style, spicy chicken, Mexican tacos and Okinawan pork and egg. Check the official Instagram for which ones are on the menu.
